Twisty Puzzle Design is an interactive tabletop exhibit where visitors can create, scramble, and solve their own virtual 3-D puzzles.
Visitors can explore a library of unique puzzles, using multi-touch gestures to twist and rotate the virtual shapes. Visitors can also create their own custom puzzles using simple, step-by-step instructions. They begin by choosing a 3-D shape, then virtually slice it into up to 216 pieces, and apply their choice of colors to each facet. The custom puzzles can be scrambled, solved, and saved for other users to explore.
The experience helps visitors understand the 3-D geometry of the puzzles, and the relationship between their core mechanisms and their outer appearance. Developed with Liberty Science Center for the travelling exhibit Beyond Rubik’s Cube, the activity is adjacent to a display of historic twisty puzzles, many of which can be explored interactively on the tabletop.
