Navigating Difference is a multi-site installation developed for the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience that lets visitors share their thoughts and opinions about immigration with others around the world. Brief video sequences ask visitors to consider whether immigration benefits their country, community, or themselves. Visitors can vote, add photos and comments, and see the aggregate responses of visitors at museums in New York, Belgium, and Italy, with other locations to be added as the program expands.
The multi-language exhibit uses an XML-based content management system to facilitate regionalization, and a central web database for global survey data. The program addresses Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance regulations with full multi-lingual audio assistance, text-to-speech and live translation for visitor comments, and open captioning.
